2021 NFL Draft Notebook: Isaiah Wilson trade, Pooka Williams, Kyle Pitts and much more
By John Blair
This week’s NFL Draft Notebook takes a look at how the Miami Dolphins found nice value when trading for troubled offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson. We also discuss why it might make sense for Pooka Williams to switch to receiver, a quarterback who could be a sleeper in the 2021 NFL Draft and much more.
Fresh Start for Isaiah Wilson
One of the more underrated moves of the week happened when the Miami Dolphins traded for 2020 first-round pick Isaiah Wilson. The team gave up very little for Wilson, as they just swapped seventh-round picks with the Tennessee Titans. The team was able to get Wilson so cheap as he had an absolutely disastrous rookie season last year, only playing on three offensive snaps and finding himself in trouble several times off the field.
Coming out of Georgia, Wilson was considered a raw prospect who had a high upside. The reason he showed such a high upside was his enormous size and strength. This strength allowed him to excel as a run blocker for the Bulldogs, but he also was a very effective pass blocker. In his final year at Georgia, he only allowed two hits on the quarterback and one sack. It also must be noted that he had no obvious character concerns coming out of college.
In terms of where he will fit with Miami, he will likely see limited playing time next year. This is due to him still having plenty of issues to work on both on and off the field. However, with a new start under a coach who demands discipline in Brian Flores, he will be able to turn his career around and become a contributor in the future.
