Denver Broncos complete seven-round 2021 NFL mock draft
Denver Broncos mock draft: Round 2, 40th overall
The Denver Broncos may simply bring Phillip Lindsay back and move forward with him and Melvin Gordon at the running back position. However, the pair did not mesh particularly well this past season and going younger at running back could make some sense. In this mock draft scenario, Lindsay is not back in Denver and the team replaces him with Javonte Williams in the second round.
Williams is a big and powerful running back prospect who hits the hole hard and explodes through with impressive burst. He is an extremely physical runner who never shies away from contact and does a great job of grinding through to create extra yardage.
Williams is not the most elusive back in space, but he does a great job of finding his hole quick and exploding through to the second level. He undoubtedly has high-level burst for a bigger back.
While Williams is certainly an odd fit in a committee with Gordon, he is simply too great of a value to ignore in this range. In this scenario, the Denver Broncos would be drafting Williams as their immediate featured back and Gordon would be pushed to the side in a part-time role. The Broncos did invest heavily in Gordon last offseason, but he only has one year remaining on his contract. Williams is a better player and would undoubtedly provide more long-term value for the team.
Selecting Williams in the second round and looking to find a speed back to compliment him feels like a strong plan of attack for the Denver Broncos at the running back position this offseason.
