Cornerback. Patrick Surtain II. 45. Scouting Report. Alabama. 9. player. Pick Analysis

This is a great spot to be in for the Denver Broncos. The team that was once rich at the quarterback position with guys like Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr. and A.J. Bouye now severely lack talent at the spot. Sitting here with the ninth pick of this 2021 NFL mock draft, they have their pick of the top corners in the draft.

In this NFL mock draft, Denver opts for Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II, son of the former Miami Dolphin great. With NFL bloodlines and SEC experience, Surtain II has what it takes to make a smooth transition to the NFL and Vic Fangio’s defense.

Surtain II is probably the most well-rounded corner in the 2021 NFL Draft, which will be important to his role in Fangio’s scheme. Although Surtain II often lined up near the line of scrimmage in what appeared to be press-man coverage, he would often bail and play off-man or zone. Switching up looks and coverages is important to the success of a defense under this scheme.

While at Alabama, Surtain II faced a ton of high-end talent and always held his own. Although he would give up an occasional big play, Surtain II typically kept himself in a great position to make a play. He stays glued to receivers in man, has great vision in zone and is very physical throughout the route and at the catch point.

Denver will have to give some consideration to Caleb Farley out of Virginia Tech at this spot, as he is more of a true zone corner to fit into a zone-heavy defense. However, I think Surtain II is more versatile and has what it takes to hang with AFC West receivers like Tyreek Hill, Keenan Allen and Henry Ruggs III, all guys that the Broncos will have to deal with for years to come.
