Safety. 15. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. TCU. Trevon Moehrig. 28. player

TCU’s Trevon Moehrig is the best safety in the 2021 NFL Draft. He is the most well-rounded player at the position and fills a position of need for the well-rounded roster of the New Orleans Saints.

Even if Drew Brees retires, the Saints still seem to be in pretty good position to stay competitive. Although they are in a bit of a cap pinch, I think New Orleans could be even better this year if they decide to stick with Jameis Winston at the helm.

Where their lack of cap space will likely hurt them is their ability to retain their own scheduled free agents. They will likely lose guys like Trey Hendrickson, Jared Cook and Sheldon Rankins who will all likely seek paydays out of the realistic range of the Saints. But the biggest loss could be safety Marcus Williams.

Williams has been one of the Saints’ best defensive players over the past few seasons and has almost certainly played himself into a contract that the Saints can’t afford. Bringing in a suitable replacement will be key to their success on the defensive side of the ball.

Moehrig should be able to do just that at free safety. He has outstanding instincts both pre-snap and during the play, always seeming to end up in the right place. He has great vision and uses impressive closing speed to make a break on a pass or a ball carrier.

Once he gets to the catch point, he has outstanding ball skills. He almost always seems to break up the pass or come down with the ball himself. He is a sound tackler, a fiery competitor and even has some returning experience so you know he is good with the ball in his hand.

Trevon Moehrig and the New Orleans Saints seem like a match made in heaven in this 2021 NFL mock draft. Guys like Marcus Davenport, Adam Trautman and Shy Tuttle may need to step up and fill some of the other holes left from this offseason, but Moehrig would be an outstanding option to fill one of the biggest through the 2021 NFL Draft.
