2021 NFL Draft grade: Third round

Tennessee’s Trey Smith has had one of the more interesting careers of any guard in the 2021 NFL Draft class. On the field, he has been dominant as he was named a second-team All-American in 2020 and All-SEC in 2019. Unfortunately, he has also seen his battles off the field as he missed a large part of the 2018 season due to blood clots in his lungs.

The first thing that stands out with Trey Smith is his enormous size as he comes in at 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds which makes him one of the bigger guards in the 2021 NFL Draft class. To go along with his size Smith also has the power to dominate his man, which he often did over the past two seasons.

The biggest concern with Smith will be how he checks out medically. This is a concern due to the blood clots he had, on the positive side though he has started 22 straight games since returning from the injury. Another issue with him is he is not the most agile athlete which will limit the type of scheme he can play in at the next level.

The grades Trey Smith earns from NFL teams will largely vary on the type of scheme they run. Teams that run a lot of zone will likely not be high on him due to his limited athletic ability. However, teams that run a gap running scheme will like the strength Smith brings to the table, and will likely look at him as a possible third-round pick.
