2021 NFL Draft: Jets, Panthers fill QB need in three-round mock draft
2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 7th overall
If the Detroit Lions really believe in Jared Goff, this pick is unlikely. However, I do not know how they could have watched him play last year and really believe in him as their long-term franchise quarterback. If the Lions find an opportunity to land a true franchise quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, they simply must jump on that opportunity. With Trey Lance being on the board here at No. 7, the Lions find their guy.
Lance is not the most polished quarterback prospect around but he has all of the talent needed to be an absolute star at the next level. Lance has the arm talent needed to hit any throw on the field and does a nice job of improvising and making plays off-schedule when needed. He throws a beautiful deep ball, hitting receivers in stride deep down the field with consistency.
On top of his ridiculous natural arm talent, Lance has tremendous mobility at the quarterback position. He is a fast and powerful runner who can pick up chunk yardage with his legs and fight for tough yards when needed.
No matter what they do this offseason, the Lions are unlikely to be serious competitors anytime soon. With this in mind, taking a big swing for the future would certainly make some sense. In this scenario, the Lions could move forward with Jared Goff as their starting quarterback in 2021 and let Lance grow as an NFL quarterback behind him.
When Lance is ready to take over, the Lions could move forward with him as the face of the franchise. If he plays well, they still have a ton of draft capital in future years to build a strong team around their new incredibly gifted quarterback.
