Miami Dolphins 2021 NFL Draft needs: Running Back

’20 Starters: Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Matt Breida (FA)

Led by Myles Gaskin after an injury that sidelined former lead-back Matt Breida, the Miami Dolphins running backs group was a collection of late-round and affordable talent that fit the scheme but did not offer a singular feature-player within the group.

Coming from a New England organization famous for not overcommitting themselves to a single back though, the Miami Dolphins are likely to bring new talent to procure depth and challenge the current leaders on the roster.

Within an offense that focused on quick completions, catering to the strengths of rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, having running backs that could create mismatches in space and procure their own yardage post-catch. If the Miami Dolphins are to bring in a new running back to the roster, a player who can catch the ball out of the backfield and take handoffs out of a shotgun set are must-have qualities.

In a 2021 NFL draft class that possesses running backs who could operate in such a system at all stages of the draft, is there truly a need to take a halfback with one of their first four draft picks? In a positional market continuing to lose value among front offices, the Miami Dolphins could patch this portion of their depth chart with a later selection in the 2021 NFL draft.
