Kansas City Chiefs 2021 Mock Draft: Retooling the offensive line
It’s clear that the Kansas City Chiefs were undermanned along the offensive line in Super Bowl LV. Obviously, things will be different in 2021, as Fisher and Schwartz should return. However, it’s hard to know the timeline for Fisher after an Achilles injury suffered in January.
There’s a chance he doesn’t return until the playoffs. That leaves Schwartz to man one of the bookends and an opening elsewhere.
The bigger issue is that both Fisher and Schwartz are set to be free agents after the 2021 season, and the Chiefs have big money tied elsewhere. They drafted Lucas Niang in the 2020 draft, but they may see him as a better fit for the interior.
Here, in a deep 2021 draft class, the Chiefs opt for offensive line in round one. Teven Jenkins isn’t getting as much buzz as some other top tackles, but he should be. Jenkins has a fantastic initial strike to control and neutralize pass rushers, and he does a good job getting into quick sets in pass protection.
He’s also a mauler in the run game and looks to bury defenders any chance he gets. Jenkins could potentially start right away with the Chiefs and become a key bookend alongside Schwartz for the long term.
