It was a tough ending to the repeat campaign for the Kansas City Chiefs. After a season with minimal resistance, they finally met their match in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Super Bowl Sunday. Down both Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz at tackle, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense sputtered after taking a 3-0 lead.

Their offensive line couldn’t hold up against a vicious pass rush led by Shaq Barrett, Vita Vea, and Jason Pierre-Paul. They kept Mahomes on the run the entire game, and the Chiefs could never establish a rhythm.

Meanwhile, the defense couldn’t get home to stop Tom Brady and looked lethargic stopping the run. The 31-9 loss is the worst in the Mahomes/Andy Reid era and proves that it’s very difficult to repeat as champions in the NFL. Mahomes can’t take the fault here, as he might have played a better game than Brady. The Chiefs, however, were overmatched by Tampa Bay.

It’s easy to say that the Chiefs will be back, as they have the top talent at the quarterback position and great weapons on offense. However, the path may end up being more difficult than expected. There are several great quarterbacks across the history of the NFL who have only made one Super Bowl.

Let’s hope that we get to see Mahomes and company in another Super Bowl. To do that, they need help along their offensive line, and at every level of the defense. To help them retool for another deep run, let’s take a look at who they could select in the 2021 NFL Draft in this mock.
