2021 NFL Draft: Huge QB trades in pre-Super Bowl mock draft
2021 NFL Draft: 12th pick
The San Francisco 49ers suddenly find themselves in a very interesting position.
They are both the most recent NFC West team to represent the division in the Super Bowl and the team with the worst quarterback situation. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch didn’t put too much effort towards acquiring Matthew Stafford, so what is San Francisco’s play?
Jimmy Garoppolo is still under contract and the 49ers obviously had that 2021 cap figure in their budget. The best option for them could very well be to look into long-term solutions through the 2021 NFL Draft.
Enter Trey Lance, perhaps the poster boy for “long-term solution” in this class.
There is a definite risk-reward factor in drafting a player like Lance (even though every player carries some level of risk). Lance has just 17 games under his belt, six of which he completed 56.5 percent of his passes or less at North Dakota State.
He has some bad tape out there, but he also has some outstanding tape and playmaking ability. He has the traits to really mold an offense around and the 49ers could see this as the play to really climbing back into the thick of things in the NFC West “from now on” rather than just looking at 2021 as a window year.
