2021 NFL Draft: 2nd pick
With the first trade of the 2021 NFL draft, Deshaun Watson finds his way to his newly-named top destination, pairing with head coach Robert Saleh to reinvigorate a long-standing symbol of inferiority.
Dealing both of their first-round selections in this year’s draft as well as a first-rounder in the 2022 NFL draft, the New York Jets sell out on the idea that Watson can elevate their current offense to relevancy. Sam Darnold also gets his second chance as the short-term starter in Houston with a chance to prove himself.
After acquiring Sam Darnold, the Houston Texans’ first order of business will be rearming their offense with weapons to make life easier for the confidence-stricken quarterback. To accomplish this feat, Houston opts for the top receiver of the 2021 NFL draft with the ability to create separation and generate yardage after the catch.
As described, Alabama’s Devonta Smith is a clinical route-runner with the capability to turn upfield and create additional yardage after the catch. With Watson’s former favorite wideout Will Fuller on his way out via free agency, Smith is a prospect who can fill this void from day one and create easy completions for his quarterback.
