2021 NFL Draft prospect Jamie Newman‘s debut in a red jersey was highly anticipated, but nobody expected that the first time we’d see him wearing one would be in Mobile at the Senior Bowl on the practice field.

Newman transferred to Georgia after playing at Wake Forest from 2017-19. The 2020 season at Georgia was supposed to send Newman’s 2021 NFL Draft stock soaring, but it never came to pass.

Newman opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic and decided instead to focus on preparations for the 2021 Draft.

The practice field at Mobile is the first anyone is really seeing of him since he last played for Wake Forest.

As a member of the Demon Deacons, Newman put together a number of games to give NFL teams plenty to think about.

At 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, Newman looks like he was carved out of marble and he has athletic tools to match his impressive physical stature. He’s proving early on at the Senior Bowl that his combination of physical tools, athleticism, and arm talent might be too much for teams to ignore.

Newman’s now got everyone’s attention after a strong day one of practice.

At Wake Forest, despite some inconsistencies with accuracy, Newman was very strong on making tight-window throws and fitting the ball into spots.

In terms of his NFL Draft stock, opting out of the 2020 season didn’t seem to do Newman any favors. Most projections right now have him landing sometime on early-mid day three of the 2021 NFL Draft, but with a successful year at Georgia, it’s possible he could have been a first-round pick.

At this point, that’s neither here nor there and it’s impossible to blame anyone who opted out of the 2020 season.

What Newman has now is Mobile, and we’ve seen in recent years how much the Senior Bowl process can mean for players.

There’s no changing Newman’s previous college tape, but he’s put enough “good” out there for scouts and evaluators that if he has a strong week in Mobile, teams will have no choice but to project a bit based on the position he plays.

With no visits to team facilities allowed and no Scouting Combine, how Newman fares the rest of the week at the Senior Bowl could elevate him to day two of the 2021 NFL Draft.
