3. Sign a Veteran

Third on the list here for the Indianapolis Colts would be to bring in a veteran to play offensive tackle. Things obviously went well with their last high profile signing, Philip Rivers, and while he’s moving on to greener pastures, Ballard could decide to dip his toes in free agency at the tackle spot in 2021.

The top option for this is Trent Williams. At age 32, Williams played in 14 games and on 957 snaps for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 and looked like a player who is nowhere near done. While his contract might be around $15 million per year, it’s worth it on a two-year deal if the Colts believe they’re in a position to win now with whoever they bring in at quarterback.

Looking elsewhere across the free agency landscape, former Steelers tackle Alejandro Villanueva would be interesting. His contract wouldn’t be as steep, and he’s played well enough recently for the Indianapolis Colts to feel comfortable with him out there.

To throw one more wrinkle in, if the Colts do move Nelson to tackle, signing a free agent guard could work out well. They may not go after the top guys, but players like Jon Feliciano or Lane Taylor would be interesting at a lower cap hit.
