2021 NFL Draft: 49ers make aggressive move for QB in 3-round mock draft
2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 3rd overall
The San Francisco 49ers are a talented team with legitimate impact players on both sides of the ball. However, their quarterback situation continues to hold this team back. Kyle Shanahan has done his best with what he has had to work with but Jimmy Garoppolo and company simply are not getting the job done.
With this in mind, the San Francisco 49ers get aggressive in this mock draft, trading all the way up to No. 3 overall from No. 12. In exchange for dropping down nine spots, the Miami Dolphins receive the Dolphins’ second-round 2021 NFL Draft pick, their first and second-round picks in 2022 and a third-rounder in 2023. After trading up to No. 3, the 49ers take Zach Wilson to be their new franchise quarterback.
Wilson is a dynamic playmaker at the quarterback position, showing fantastic mobility in the pocket, tremendous natural arm talent and pinpoint accuracy at levels of the field. Wilson is also extremely poised in the pocket, knowing when to stand tall and rip the ball down the field and when he needs to escape.
The BYU product also throws the ball with great anticipation and timing, showing fantastic rapport with his college teammates. Timing is an incredibly important part of the 49ers’ offense and Wilson has an incredible knack for releasing the ball at the right time and putting it exactly where it needs to be.
Make no mistake about it, the 49ers would be giving up a haul in this trade. That being said, Wilson is a fantastic quarterback prospect who is worth the investment. This team is built to win right now, they are just missing a true playmaker at the most important position on the field.
Shanahan is the perfect coach to get the most out of Wilson and his new quarterback has the talent to get this team back into the Super Bowl mix. Making this kind of move would be risky but the upside of the 49ers trading up for Wilson would be absolutely massive for the team.
