2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 13th overall

Pick Analysis. Northwestern. player. 13. Scouting Report. OL. Rashawn Slater. 13

Rashawn Slater is commonly considered the OT2 of the 2021 NFL Draft class. While there are others who deserve to be in the conversation, Slater is considered to be at the top of the tier behind Penei Sewell for most and would undoubtedly be a strong fit for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Slater is an extremely powerful player who absolutely dominates at the point of attack and will ride opposing defenders down the field with ease. He is quick off of the ball, shows good mobility in space and displays fantastic natural grip strength up front. Simply put, once Slater gets his hands on a defender, it is typically game over.

While Slater’s game is primarily based on power, he does show good athleticism for an offensive tackle and mirrors well in pass protection. Slater is always at his best when he is allowed to play forward and attack the defender but he can sit back into deep pass sets and have success against most rushers as well.

A lack of arm length will cause some to pause about Slater as an offensive tackle prospect at the next level but he undoubtedly has an exciting skill-set that gives him a chance to dominate up front. Whether Slater shines at tackle or moves inside to guard and dominates, he would provide a much-needed improvement for the Chargers’ offensive line mix. Protecting Justin Herbert has to be priority number one for the Chargers and taking Slater would certainly help.
