Predicting NFL head coach hires: Who will lead top 2021 NFL Draft picks?
My pick: Brian Daboll, Offensive Coordinator, Buffalo Bills
We finally agree! Brian Daboll to the Los Angeles Chargers may be my favorite fit this offseason. I think the stars align to make this an absolute perfect pairing.
Many believed that after a few wins late in the year that former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn’s job would be safe. That is, unless the front office truly believed that they had a very good chance to land a guy that they really, really liked. Many believe that Daboll is one of those guys and I think LA would love to have him.
If you look at what Daboll and the Buffalo Bills have done over the past few seasons, you can almost envision the exact same thing happening with the Chargers. Josh Allen and Justin Herbert had a ton of similarities coming in the NFL. Strong arm, mobile quarterbacks with some accuracy concerns. Allen took a little bit to come into his own at the next level, while Herbert has already taken the league by storm as a rookie.
Looking at the Bills, they had Stefon Diggs this year. The Chargers? Oh yeah, they have a guy named Keenan Allen. Gabriel Davis came on strong as a big-body deep and red zone threat. Chargers have Mike Williams. John Brown, Cole Beasley and Isaiah McKenzie in Buffalo? Jalen Guyton, Tyron Johnson and K.J. Hill all showed promise in LA. You get where I’m going.
There are a ton of parallels between the Bills over the last couple of seasons with Daboll operating the offense and the Chargers roster right now. Add in Austin Ekeler and Hunter Henry as arguable upgrades at their respective positions, and there is no ceiling for this offense. Factor in defensive stars like Joey Bosa, Derwin James, Casey Hayward and Melvin Ingram that the Bills currently lack and you can really see the Chargers following the Bills blueprint to the promised land in the coming years.
