2021 NFL Draft stock down: Looking at some risky draft prospects
By John Blair
Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
The riskiest prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft class might be North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. While Lance has some impressive traits he also has plenty of questions that surround him. These questions include only starting at North Dakota State for one year, playing at a lower level of competition, and that he still needs to improve as a passer.
On the other hand, he does display plenty of traits to excite NFL teams. One of the top traits Lance possesses is his strong football character and leadership. His North Dakota State coaches rave about how poised he stays under pressure and his overall leadership ability.
To go along with having the personality to succeed in the NFL, Lance also plenty of athletic traits to get scouts excited. To start with he has the arm strength to throw any pass in an NFL offense, although he does need to work on his deep-ball accuracy.
He is a threat running the ball as well, as he rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2019. As a runner, he shows the strength to run through tackles and looks a little like a young Cam Newton carrying the ball.
One more positive, with him is his decision-making skills as he didn’t throw a pick last year, but this stat is a little misleading as he did throw several passes into coverage which would probably be picked off in the NFL.
