New England Patriots

Another year, another draft of speculating if the New England Patriots will take a quarterback. The Cam Newton experience resulted in a playoff-less season for the Patriots and that could be the final straw that pushes them to draft a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The catch, though, is that I still don’t see Bill Belicheck drafting a quarterback early, instead waiting once again until the middle rounds. He’s had success in the past with quarterbacks outside the first and could roll the dice again. Obviously, there’s Tom Brady, but he also found Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round and Jacoby Brissett in the third, among others. He could try to do it again.

Belicheck’s draft strategy is one of the hardest to predict in all of football and the 2021 NFL Draft might be the most difficult yet. The Patriots have a lot of needs, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him overlook quarterback for another year.

One other possibility I’ll throw out there that doesn’t have anything to do with this article, but why not? What if the Patriots end up trading for Garoppolo or Brissett? Both are in uneasy situations where they are and know the system in New England. It’s an interesting thought. If that doesn’t happen, then look for the Patriots to entertain the idea of a mid-round quarterback once again.
