2021 NFL Draft: Five teams in the market for a mid-round quarterback
By Kyle Edmond
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears have had a whirlwind of a year overall, but especially at quarterback. Jumping between Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky throughout the year, the Bears are right back where they started in their quarterback competition. To make matters worse, they didn’t pick up Trubisky’s fifth-year option, so they’ll have to make a free agent decision regarding him.
No matter what the team decides, they should heavily consider investing in a quarterback during the 2021 NFL Draft. The downside is that they ended up in the playoffs, so their pick will be far from the range needed for a top quarterback. They could waste away more draft capital in another trade up for a quarterback, or they can invest in a mid-round pick.
If the Bears do re-sign Trubisky, then they should consider adding competition, which would make sense with a mid-round pick. While Trubisky has been the better of the bunch in Chicago, he still isn’t the answer for the Bears. Adding competition helped him this year and could again moving forward.
If the Bears don’t re-sign Trubisky, then a quarterback will be even more needed in the draft. If that’s the route they go, then they will be stuck with whoever they decide to add to replace him. Odds are that would be a veteran or a younger player that was let go by a different team, meaning they probably have an uphill battle.
Regardless of what happens with Trubisky, the Bears need another option and the best place for them to look without selling the future of the team again will be the middle rounds.
