2021 NFL Draft: Florida TE Kyle Pitts a worthy target for Dallas Cowboys
Florida tight end Kyle Pitts should be taken seriously as a 2021 NFL Draft target for the Dallas Cowboys
After they took a 23-19 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys fell out of playoff contention and will now look forward to the offseason. The Cowboys are now cemented into the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, where they will be able to add another impact player to the mix.
Typically, we look at the defensive side of the ball when determining which direction the Cowboys will go in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and for good reason. The Cowboys were consistently dominated on the ground through the 2020 season, allowing 158.8 rushing yards per game, the second-most in the entire league. Their struggling rush defense led to the Cowboys allowing 29.6 points per game, the fifth-most in the NFL.
Simply put, the Cowboys’ defense was a major issue all season long, and while their offense was far from perfect, getting Dak Prescott under center should get that unit back on track. It is easy to see why the Dallas Cowboys should be attacking the defensive side of the ball in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Building an unstoppable offensive attack
That being said, offense is king in the modern NFL and it will certainly be tempting for Dallas to continue to stack talent on that side of the ball. Led by Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb, the Cowboys already have a strong group of receivers for Prescott to work with in the passing game. If they could add an impact pass-catcher at the tight end position, their passing attack would be nearly impossible to stop. Enter Florida tight end Kyle Pitts.
Pitts is the best tight end prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft and honestly, it’s not even close. Pitts does not bring much to the table as a blocker but he is a dynamic weapon in the passing game who is an absolute matchup nightmare in the middle of the field.
The Florida product shows a fantastic combination of size, speed and athleticism at the tight end position. He is a smooth and explosive route runner who creates separation with ease against linebackers who try to check him. Pitts obviously cannot separate quite the same against most defensive backs, but his size is typically completely overwhelming for opposing cornerbacks and safeties. Pitts’ wide catch radius makes him a tremendous weapon in contested-catch situations.
The Dallas Cowboys have major needs on the defensive side of the ball but adding Pitts to their offensive arsenal will certainly be tempting if he is available when they go on the clock in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. I mean, who’s going to stop Dallas if Prescott is slinging passes to Cooper, Lamb, Gallup and Pitts all over the field?
