2021 NFL Draft predictions for the 2020 Heisman finalists
Despite leading the FBS in passing yards and touchdowns, this candidate seems to be a distant third.
Kyle Trask, Quarterback, Florida
Season Overview: Florida’s offensive leader this year, quarterback Kyle Trask, has had himself quite an impressive season. He leads the FBS in both passing yards and passing touchdowns with 4,125 and 43 respectively. Unfortunately for him, because Florida has three losses and the other three candidates all play on playoff teams, Trask is likely looking at a third-place finish in the Heisman voting this year.
Looking further at Trask, he is a fairly accurate passer, completing 69.7% of his passes while throwing just five interceptions on the year. However, while many people tend to think of him as a dual-threat runner due to Florida’s odd habit of asking him to run the ball (60 carries on the year) he has picked up just 50 yards on the ground (less than a yard per carry) and three touchdowns. Even though he isn’t a great runner there are still things to like about his abilities themselves.
Trask is a good distributor of the ball, often making good quick reads and getting the ball out to his playmakers in the open field. His accuracy fades the farther he throws downfield, probably due to his lack of top-end arm strength. While it’s not debilitating, there are questions as to whether or not he will be able to make some of the tight window throws that are often needed at the NFL level.
Despite this question and others surrounding his all-around mobility, he had a thoroughly impressive season in Flordia this year and deserves to be a Heisman finalist.
2021 NFL Draft Predictions: Of all the Heisman finalists, Trask is likely to be the last selected in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. As previously mentioned, he needs to answer some serious concerns about his play and will need a good Combine to boost his draft stock. At the moment, his draft stock is probably hovering between a mid-second round draft pick to a third-round pick.
Should they miss out on Jones in the second round, the Chicago Bears may be interested in Trask with their second-round pick but if they swung and missed on Trask after the miserable Mitch Trubisky experiment both the coach and general manager would likely be out of a job. Other teams that may look at Trask in the aforementioned draft range could include the Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts, Steelers, and Saints.
Depending on who takes over in Atlanta, should Trask fall to the early third, a new regime in Atlanta could be interested enough in Trask early in the third to pull the trigger and make him a Falcon. Trask’s NFL draft prospects are the hardest to pin down of the Heisman finalists at the moment but the teams mentioned above make the most sense in the second to third rounds.
