David Montgomery is becoming a major impact player for the Chicago Bears

Two weeks ago, the Chicago Bears were coming off of their sixth consecutive loss and appeared to be extremely unlikely to reach the post-season. On Sunday, the Bears defeated the Minnesota Vikings 33-27, winning their second consecutive game, putting them at 7-7 on the year and squarely in the NFC playoff discussion.

The Bears have turned their season around quickly the last couple of weeks on the back of their offense. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has been playing well, but it is running back David Montgomery who is carrying the Bears’ offensive attack.

Montgomery has been great over the last four games

On the year, Montgomery has carried the ball 202 times for 906 yards and six touchdowns. He has taken his game to the next level the last four games, carrying the ball 71 times for 434 yards and five touchdowns. He has also been an impact player for the Chicago Bears in the passing game, hauling in 13-of-16 targets for 137 yards and a touchdown reception.

Early in the year, Montgomery started to look like a bust. He did not show the power/speed combination that made us all excited when he was coming into the league. However, Montgomery has looked fantastic in recent weeks and is starting to look like the high-level running back prospect that he once was.

Montgomery appears to be seeing the field much better than before. With the Bears’ shaky quarterback play, he is always going to be running into heavy boxes a lot of the time. That being said, Montgomery is showing impressive ball carrier vision, displaying the ability to find the hole when it presents itself.

While Montgomery is never going to be an elite speed back who is going to outrace defenders to the house, he does show some strong burst through the hole once he finds a crease. He also displays solid short-area quickness and is a tough and physical runner at the contact point.

The Chicago Bears are far from a perfect team, but Montgomery playing at this level gives them a much-needed offensive identity. Their ceiling is limited as a team, but Montgomery taking this major step forward down the stretch run is undoubtedly a great sign for the Bears going forward.
