123. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Cornerback. 4. player. Virginia Tech. Caleb Farley

This pick is primarily about need for the Dallas Cowboys. There aren’t many true, sure-fire top-of-the-draft prospects in this 2021 NFL Draft, so the selections will likely come down to filling needs. And have you seen the Cowboys’ secondary this year?

Dallas desperately needs help in their defensive backfield. A lot of help. They could really use a complete changing of the guard, and a young cornerback duo of Trevon Diggs and Caleb Farley would be a very solid start.

So far, I believe that Farley is the best cornerback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. He is still a little raw as a player, but he has the potential to completely shut down a side of the field. His incredible length, athleticism, and ball skills will make him a great piece for a defensive coach to mold at the next level.

With his size, length and athleticism, Farley can take on any receiver in man coverage. He can match them stride for stride and battle at the catch point with the best of them. He rarely played press coverage in the film that I watched, but that is where he should thrive in man.

Where Farley excelled at Virginia Tech was in zone coverage. He has great instincts, closing speed and ball skills to be able to find the ball and make a play. Not only does he force incompletions, but he has the ball skills and the hands to grab interceptions.

Farley still has some room to improve technically and mentally. In man coverage, he often opens his hips too early which will likely lead to more completions allowed against NFL receivers. He also tends to try to make the big play by jumping routes a little too often, leading to him getting beat on occasion.

Overall, Farley is a scheme-diverse, big-body corner with a sky-high ceiling. He and 2020 second-round pick, Diggs, should prove to be a very solid duo at corner for a defense that needs an overhaul.
