2021 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears trade up for QB in two-round mock draft
As the lone undefeated team remaining in the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers roster clearly doesn’t have too many holes that would hold them down. They’re a little thin at linebacker with the injury to Devin Bush but the defense is still tops in the league.
The main need that I can see for the 2021 NFL Draft would be an upgrade at right tackle. Chukwuma Okorafor has not really panned out, finally starting this season after being selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. It just so happens that in this mock, the best right tackle fell right into their lap.
Jalen Mayfield played right tackle for the Michigan Wolverines. With the emphasis on left tackles in today’s NFL, it’s possible that Mayfield could fall just a bit. But there was no way he was getting past the Steelers.
Mayfield’s pass sets are probably the prettiest that I have seen so far. His footwork is near perfect and he uses his length to his advantage to keep defenders out of his body. He has quick feet to stay in front and strong hands to keep rushers at bay.
Using those strong hands, Mayfield is effective at turning defenders to open up rushing lanes. He always knows just where he needs to be and what he needs to do to spring a big play. I would, however, like to see Mayfield be a little more aggressive, particularly in the run game. He is more of a technical blocker than a physical blocker.
Mayfield slides perfectly in at right tackle for the streaking Steelers and should help keep that Pittsburgh offense rolling as the final selection of the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
