2021 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears trade up for QB in two-round mock draft
After selecting both their franchise quarterback and tackles to protect him in 2020, the Miami Dolphins can go out and get Tua Tagovailoa some weapons to work with in the 2021 NFL Draft. Here at 11, they get him a familiar face.
By selecting Jaylen Waddle, Tua has a comfortable deep threat to work with. While Henry Ruggs III and Jerry Jeudy got all the love as draft prospects last year, Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith were just as impressive. With Waddle out for the year and Smith playing out of his mind, Smith could play his way to WR1. But Waddle brings a different dynamic to the Miami offense.
Waddle is one of the best deep threats in the country. He has blazing speed and does a great job of tracking the ball in the air. He is also outstanding with the ball in his hands, making him a threat to score any time he touches the ball. That also makes him a very effective return man, where he has scored multiple times in his Bama career.
Waddle uses his speed and suddenness to his advantage when running routes, putting defenders on skates at times. His burst out of his break gives him plenty of separation and he always seems to have an extra gear once he makes the catch to finish the play for a score.
He is a fairly similar player to a guy that the Dolphins already have in Jakeem Grant, but Waddle is already a more polished and well-rounded receiver with a higher ceiling. A Tyreek Hill-like ceiling.
Giving Tua a familiar face like Waddle should help him become more comfortable in his offense and Waddle would bring a whole new dynamic alongside DeVante Parker.
