Zach Wilson gets a great test vs. Coastal Carolina

The 2021 NFL Draft class has some very interesting quarterbacks near the top of the crop, and BYU’s Zach Wilson has been weekly must-see-TV.

His latest matchup was against a very tough Coastal Carolina team, already with a win against a top-25 team this season and seeking its second.

In what ended up being one of the most thrilling games of the college football season so far, Wilson and the BYU Cougars came up just two yards short against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina.

And when we say two yards, we mean two yards.

Statistically, this was a tough performance from Wilson. he completed 19-of-30 passes with a touchdown and an interception at the end of the first half when he was just trying to throw up a Hail Mary and make something happen.

That ball traveled about 70 yards in the air, too.

There were times when Wilson did struggle with the pressure packages being thrown at him by Coastal Carolina. That means that all three of the top quarterbacks behind Trevor Lawrence (Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields) have shown some struggles against really good pressure packages in recent weeks.

Wilson added 55 yards as a runner as well with a long run of 18 yards.

He showed off the full arsenal of his skills in this game despite not having gaudy numbers.

His arm strength is tremendous, and not just when chucking the ball deep downfield. Wilson puts such great velocity on his throws and that velocity put his team in a position to win on a very good-looking final drive, the one that fell just two yards short.

Wilson had a couple of bad plays in this one, but he also had some big plays left out there on the field by his receivers. One of his best deep throws of the night hit a receiver in the chest. It would have been a heck of a catch by the receiver in a contested situation, but on a throw that was 60 yards downfield or more, for the ball to hit a receiver in the chest plate is remarkable.

There are certainly elements of Wilson’s game that are not fully developed (as is the case with any young prospect) but his flashes of talent are so thrilling, that it’s clear how tough it will be for general managers to decide which players they like better between Wilson, Fields, and Trey Lance.
