Head coach candidates for New York Jets and Trevor Lawrence

With the New York Jets closing in on locking up Trevor Lawrence, who should they look to pair with Lawrence as the team’s next head coach in 2021? Each week it becomes more clear that Adam Gase isn’t the coach for the team, nor the one to mentor Lawrence. However, who is the right fit?

While the Jets landing the first pick all but ensures that they select Lawrence, it won’t take just Lawrence to fix the mess that has become the New York Jets. The next head coach for the Jets needs to not only be able to work with Lawrence, but also build up the rest of the team.

With that being said, the core of the team will run through Lawrence. Having a rookie quarterback under center should push the team to look into an offensive-minded coach who can bring with him a strong defensive coordinator. Finding a combination of that sort is much easier and has shown more success of late than the other way around.

Despite there being two teams to have already made the call to fire their head coach, the New York Jets haven’t been one of them. Seeing the state of the roster, perhaps it just makes more sense to the team to ride out Gase since there isn’t a chance of improving at the moment. Either way, they need to start looking and preparing a list of who to interview that will be able to grow with Lawrence and build the Jets back up.

While there are sure to be plenty of names on the list, these five should provide a starting point for the New York Jets’ search for the next head coach to pair with Trevor Lawrence, should he be the player they select at the top of the 2021 NFL Draft.
