Looking at the early 2021 NFL Draft needs for the Detroit Lions

After their ugly loss to the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving Day, the Detroit Lions decided to move on from head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn. Their search for a new duo to lead the franchise is likely already underway, as the team looks to move forward in a new direction.

It is difficult to make offseason predictions for a team like the Lions until they made their hires at the top. That being said, we can still look at the roster and see what they need. In this post, we are going to take a look at the five biggest positions of need that the Detroit Lions should look to target in the 2021 NFL Draft.

1. Wide Receiver

With guys like Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola hitting free agency, wide receiver will likely be a major need for the Lions in the 2021 NFL Draft. The only wide receivers that the Lions have under contract for 2021 are Quintez Cephus and Geronimo Allison, and Allison is only under contract because he sat out the 2020 season with COVID-19 concerns.

Bringing back Golladay will likely be the number one priority for the Lions in the upcoming offseason. However, even if they are able to bring Golladay into the mix, wide receiver still stands out as a major need for the team.

Luckily for Detroit, the 2021 NFL Draft class is likely to be extremely loaded at the position. Guys like Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle and Rashod Bateman lead the way at the top of the class, but there is a ton of depth at the position which could allow the Lions to wait a bit at the position if they wish. Regardless of when the pick is made, expect wide receiver to be a major priority for the Detroit Lions in the 2021 NFL Draft.
