Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

Dak Prescott is the franchise quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. That being said, there could be an opportunity for Dallas to look in a different direction this offseason. Prescott is currently on the franchise tag and the Cowboys will undoubtedly be looking to sign him to a massive extension over the offseason. Unfortunately, they are not in an ideal cap situation and locking down Prescott is not going to be easy.

If they end up picking as early in the 2021 NFL Draft as it seems they will be, Dallas will have an opportunity to take a chance on a new franchise quarterback if they wish. If the right guy is available when they go on the clock, drafting a quarterback and dumping Prescott’s salary off of their books would undoubtedly be tempting. Justin Fields may be a good enough prospect for the Cowboys to seriously consider this.

Fields shows an impressive combination of arm talent and athleticism that allows him to make plays in a variety of ways. He shows a quick release, can hit any throw on the field with accuracy and is a fantastic playmaker with the ball in his hands. If the Cowboys find themselves in a position to land Fields, they have to consider making the move. Letting Prescott walk would be risky, but Fields is an elite quarterback prospect who has to be on their radar.

Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

Penei Sewell is undoubtedly one of the best overall prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft class. He is an elite offensive tackle prospect who shines as both a run blocker and pass protector. Sewell is a fantastic athlete up front who is quick off of the ball and moves extremely well in space. Add in his tremendous natural power at the point of attack and it is difficult not to get excited about Sewell at the next level.

Tyron Smith‘s long-term health is a concern and the Dallas Cowboys have undoubtedly struggled to maintain stability on the offensive line without him. If Sewell is still on the board when they go on the clock in the 2021 NFL Draft, bringing him in and sticking him at left tackle for the next decade will undoubtedly be a tempting plan of attack.
