Another impressive performance by Alabama quarterback Mac Jones takes his 2021 NFL Draft stock to the next level.

The 2021 NFL Draft quarterback class is led by Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields, and that is not going to change anytime soon. Both Lawrence and Fields are elite quarterback prospects who undoubtedly have bright futures at the next level. Lawrence and Fields will likely be the first two picks in the 2021 NFL Draft.

That being said, this quarterback class is filled with some exciting depth and a handful of potential first-round prospects who could quickly grow into legitimate franchise players at the position. Zach Wilson and Trey Lance immediately come to mind, but let’s not forget about Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.

Not just a game manager

Jones has been absolutely incredible in his first full season as the starting quarterback at Alabama, completing a ridiculous 76.2% of his passes for 2,728 yards, 23 touchdowns and only three interceptions through the first eight games. Most considered Jones to be a game manager entering the season, but he has consistently pushed the ball down the field for Alabama and is showing a legitimate NFL skill-set from under center.

Mac Jones continued his strong season on Saturday, lighting up the Auburn defense for 302 passing yards and five touchdowns in Alabama’s dominant 42-13 Iron Bowl win. Jones kicked off the scoring with a beautiful 66-yard touchdown pass to star wide receiver Devonta Smith. From there, Alabama rolled to an easy victory over their in-state rivals.

Jones consistently shows fantastic poise in the pocket and does a great job of reading the opposing defense. He senses pressure well and while his athleticism is relatively limited, he can escape and create more time with his legs when necessary. Jones is an extremely smart quarterback who rarely makes a poor decision, opting to take what the defense is giving him when necessary.

That being said, do not mistake Jones for a simple game manager who tries to dink and dunk his way down the field. He is an impressive deep-ball thrower who shows solid arm strength and high-level deep accuracy. Jones also displays great anticipation with his throws, often putting his receiver in the best possible situation to create after the catch.

While Jones does not have the exciting combination of arm talent and athleticism at the level of guys like Lawrence and Fields, he is a talented quarterback prospect who could have a bright future at the next level. When the 2021 NFL Draft rolls around, keep an eye on Mac Jones as an option for teams starting in the middle of the first round.
