Protection for San Francisco

Pick Analysis. Ohio State. 29. player. 42. Scouting Report. OL. Wyatt Davis

The San Francisco 49ers finally make a pick here, after trading down with the New York Jets for a package that included Sam Darnold. Part of the reason for adding Darnold was the injury concerns that have surrounded Jimmy Garoppolo in the last few seasons. Those injuries have in some part been due to the struggling offensive line.

The 49ers added Trent Williams this past offseason and drafted Mike McGlinchey in 2018, so the tackle positions should be fine for a few years. The interior of the line is a different story. Weston Richburg is currently hurt as is Ben Garland. That has put two players on the line that typically wouldn’t play with Laken Tomlinson completing the line.

Wyatt Davis has been one of the more highly regarded offensive guards in the draft, being a first-team All-American according to the Associated Press, CBS Sports and The Sporting News in 2019 and then was a preseason All-American this year by the Associated Press as well.

The 49ers are able to move down and add competition in their quarterback room while still landing a big need in offensive line help from Wyatt Davis. Injuries have derailed the 49ers’ season, but they can turn that into a load of assets to continue building up their team.
