Cleveland Browns should continue to feed Donovan Peoples-Jones
The Cleveland Browns should continue to get this rookie wide receiver more involved in the offense.
The Cleveland Browns were able to come away with a 37-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals over the weekend, but they did suffer a big loss. Early in that game, star wide receiver Odell Beckham went down with an injury, which was later revealed to be a torn ACL. Beckham is now out for the season, opening up an opportunity for others to make an impact in the offense.
Rookie wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones saw a larger workload than normal with Beckham out and he made the most out of his opportunity. Peoples-Jones caught three passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. His 24-yard touchdown reception down the right sideline was the game-winner with only 11 seconds left in the game. Peoples-Jones stepped up when his team needed him the most and made the play of the game.
DPJ is better than his draft status suggests
Peoples-Jones was a sixth-round selection for the Cleveland Browns in the 2020 NFL Draft. Despite his slide on draft-day, Peoples-Jones was commonly considered a talented wide receiver prospect in last year’s class. His sixth-round status was a surprise to many and could end up being a major mistake made by many teams.
Peoples-Jones has an impressive combination of size and speed that needs to be taken seriously. He is a dynamic receiver who can stretch the field and also create after the catch. Peoples-Jones had limited production in college, but his on-field talent was always obvious. The passing game at Michigan was a mess over the last couple of seasons, leading to the limited production for Peoples-Jones. He undoubtedly has the talent to make an impact in the NFL.
With Beckham out, the Cleveland Browns will need someone to step up at the wide receiver position. Jarvis Landry and Rashard Higgins will likely be listed as the starters, but Peoples-Jones may be the best big-play receiver left on the roster. Make no mistake about it, this rookie needs to be heavily featured in the Browns’ offensive attack going forward.
