Shaka Toney is quickly becoming a fast riser in the 2021 NFL Draft class.

Penn State suffered a devastating loss to Indiana in their season-opener over the weekend. There were not too many positives for the Nittany Lions in this game, but edge rusher Shaka Toney certainly made an impact.

Toney was nearly unblockable against the Hoosiers on Saturday, piling up seven tackles and two sacks in the matchup. He was able to put consistent pressure on Indiana quarterback Michael Penix and certainly made life difficult on the entire offensive unit. Toney was brilliant on Saturday and appears to be ready to take his 2021 NFL Draft stock to the next level.

Toney has been a solid contributor for Penn State the last three seasons but appears ready to take his game to the next level this season.

He is an extremely athletic edge rusher who features a fantastic first step and impressive speed around the edge. Toney is able to generate a ton of natural upfield burst and also shows the ability to get low and turn the corner in an instant.

A tough test coming up

Toney has always been an impressive speed rusher, but lacked ideal size and power to play up front. However, he does look like he has put on a bit of weight this season and held up extremely well at the point of attack against Indiana.

This week, Toney will get a huge test against a strong Ohio State offensive line. If he can continue to wreak havoc with his speed and prove his ability to hold his own at the point of attack against the Buckeyes, expect his 2021 NFL Draft to soar through the roof. Toney is undoubtedly a talented player, but going up against this Ohio State offensive line is a different animal.

The 2021 NFL Draft class lacks impact edge rusher talent at the top. There are certainly a handful of interesting players, but there is certainly an opportunity available for a couple of these guys to rise high up the ranks. Toney is an extremely talented player who got his 2020 season started off right against Indiana. If he continues to perform, NFL teams will take notice.
