Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Dallas Cowboys

I’ll admit, this one is a long shot, especially considering the deal that Ezekiel Elliott has. However, it isn’t impossible. If the Cowboys are set on building a team to fit Mike McCarthy‘s style, then Elliott could be on the way out.

This season has been a tough one for Elliott as he looks like he can’t hold onto the ball. He’s already fumbled five times this year after entering the season with a career-high of six for an entire 16 game slate.

With how the Cowboys have struggled this year, and considering that Dak Prescott is due a big contract one way or another, Dallas could be looking for a clean slate to allow McCarthy to create his roster. If that’s the case, Elliott could become expendable.

In McCarthy’s career, he’s had a top 10 rushing offense just twice. The first was his first season as the offensive coordinator in New Orleans, being 2000 when Ricky Williams rushed for exactly 1,000 yards. The other was 2013 as Green Bay’s head coach, being the season that Matt Flynn started four games for the Packers, so rushing became a necessity and Eddie Lacy exploded.

Given McCarthy’s track record for not rushing the ball combined with Elliott’s fumble-bug this season, it isn’t crazy to think that the Cowboys could look to move Elliott during the 2021 NFL Draft.
