Las Vegas Raiders: 2021 is Gruden’s chance to finish the rebuild
By Ian Higgins
2020 Starters: Kolton Miller, Trent Brown
Las Vegas seemingly has one philosophy in selecting their offensive tackle, “you can’t coach size.” Starting tackles Miller and Brown stand respectively at six-foot-nine and six-foot-eight, and have a combined weight of 687 pounds.
This physical profile means they have the strength to dominate the line of scrimmage from day one and can be coached into better pass protection with their long reach.
Samuel Cosmi is the physically imposing offensive tackle of the draft class. Although he won’t have the same alien-like measurables as 2020 NFL draft OT1 Mekhi Becton, Cosmi stands at a hefty six-foot-seven, 309 pounds.
Cosmi’s game has been highlighted by his strength and dominance in the run game, his pass protection is holding his draft stock back. Cosmi’s lower body moves and anchors well, but his key issue is in hand-placement.
Cosmi could be a mid-first round fit for the Raiders because of their ever-pressing cap situation. Needing to possibly clear $20 million in payroll, Gruden could be looking to deal or cut Trent Brown this offseason and bring in an inexpensive rookie who can fulfill the size requirement of the position schematically.
