2021 NFL Draft: New York Jets top positional needs
Running back
The New York Jets cut star running back Le’Veon Bell last week after he clashed with “offensive genius” Adam Gase. They are now featuring 37-year-old Frank Gore which makes absolutely no sense for a team that should be looking to the future.
Players that do not have a future with this team should not be playing. New York drafted La’Mical Perine in the fourth round last season and he has barely seen the field.
Now that is not a knock on Perine as he has shown positive signs when he does get snaps, but in today’s game teams employ multiple backs during games.
Envisioning a run game with Perine paired with a top college back like Najee Harris or Travis Etienne would relieve any setbacks a young quarterback could have.
Tight End
Let’s talk about how all of camp Gase was praising Chris Herndon going as far as calling him a unicorn. Where has he been?
Well, Herndon lost his starting job to Ryan Griffin after having a horrible first five games. He’s dropped open passes. Wide-open passes. When he does manage to catch one he winds up fumbling the ball anyway. He really just looks disinterested in playing football to be quite honest.
I’m not sure who the next head coach will be for the New York Jets, but whoever it is, needs to bring a tight end with him, because young quarterbacks need a big reliable target.
Quarterback
The New York Jets may not desperately need a new starting quarterback, but the way it’s looking they may stumble their way into one.
Darnold hasn’t looked very good, when healthy, and I know it’s not all on him. He has probably the worst head football coach of all time to tutor him and is surrounded by lesser talent. The New York Jets organization has failed him.
With all that being said you can still see why it is time to move on. When watching the film there are guys that are open and Darnold is just not letting it fly. He sees them, so it seems, but he’s not trusting what he’s seeing. He has regressed significantly. Not to mention in three seasons he has yet to play all 16 games due to injury/illness.
Now there is no doubt in my mind that he will blossom with a good organization and like many fans that makes me sad. But his time in New York is most likely coming to an end.
It is now up to New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson to trust Joe Douglas in finding a new head coach to begin the rebuild with his hand-picked franchise quarterback.
