2021 NFL Draft: Coby Bryant has the Mamba Mentality
By Jonah Hovis
There are a bunch of big named players in the 2021 NFL Draft at the cornerback position, but this senior has been making plays and raising eyes from draft analysis.
When you hear the name Coby Bryant you may think of the late great, legendary five-time NBA champion basketball player and not a prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. If you are a big-time Bearcat Football fan or just a fan of College Football fan you know Coby Bryant as the starting corner for the Cincinnati Bearcats. The stud corner is named after the Black Mamba himself and uses Mamba mentality in his game.
Coby Bryant stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs in around 200 pounds, which is a big frame for a cornerback. Bryant plays with a 4.5 speed having the ability to break routes and track down deep ball threats. With the size and speed which can be underrated or not traditional, Bryant uses his strengths to his advantage being a strong, physical defensive back.
Going back to that Mamba mentality, Coby Bryant is a gamer. From watching tape this season, he plays till the whistle and can be overaggressive sometimes leading to slips in his defense.
Cinnicinatti plays a very fast, aggressive style so he is a cornerstone player who molds their defense together. Byrant is also a senior and plays at the standard for all the underclassmen to follow in his footsteps. This a great trait of experience that many prospects do not have in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Byrant shows great ability to jam wide receivers at the line of scrimmage and using his big frame to counter moves at the line of scrimmage. In a play during the USF game his running mate, Ahmad Gardner had a nice cut on the route on for an interception, but if you watched the other side of the field Bryant made just as good of a break on an out route which most likely would have ended in the same result.
Speaking of the USF game, Bryant had himself a day racking up two interceptions, three forced incompletion and no touchdowns allowed on only eight targets, according to PFF. On the first interception, he sat in zone coverage while he deceived the quarterback in thinking he was edging forward then fell back to make the interception with safety help behind. On the second pick, Bryant got in a great position on a go route and made a fantastic play on the ball.
With guys at big schools like Shaun Wade at Ohio State and Caleb Farley at Virginia Tech as top prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft, a guy like Bryant isn’t getting as much look and national attention. Bryant and the Bearcats have proven they are a legit defense so far this year in the American Conference. Bryant can overplay sometimes which can put anyone in trouble but obtains a great skill set and awareness at the defensive back position.
Bryant is a guy who is not expected to go in day one and maybe could sneak his way into day two. Although if he keeps this production up, you could see this guy rise on everyone’s draft board.
