2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 3rd Overall

Oregon. Penei Sewell. 3. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. OT. 52. player

Deciding what to do here at No. 3 was extremely difficult. There is a lot to like about North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance and the Jacksonville Jaguars certainly may value him enough to bring him in to replace Gardner Minshew. That being said, left tackle is a need for this team and Penei Sewell is the best offensive tackle prospect that has entered the draft in a long time.

Nothing is more important than having a legitimate franchise quarterback, but protecting the quarterback is close. Lance could very well be the right choice here, but Sewell is the safer prospect who also fills an extremely important position of need for this team.

Sewell has it all at the offensive tackle position. He is incredibly athletic for an offensive lineman and shows fantastic natural power at the point of attack. He is quick off of the ball, understands how to win with leverage and shows tremendous hand usage at all times.

Sewell is an extremely gifted offensive tackle prospect who shines in the run game and as a pass protector. Passing on a potential franchise quarterback is tough, but Sewell is an incredibly valuable prospect in his own right. Plus, adding Sewell to the mix would only increase the chance that Minshew grows into a legitimate franchise quarterback for this team.
