Sam Darnold never grew into the franchise quarterback that the New York Jets were hoping to land when they traded up for him in the 2018 NFL Draft. Darnold has shown some promise at times, but he simply has not been good enough for the Jets to consider passing on Lawrence. If the Jets end up earning the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence should, and will, be the pick.

This selection would lead to a Darnold trade, which would likely allow the Jets to add to their already impressive stock of 2021 NFL Draft capital. Armed a ton of valuable picks, the Jets may quickly find themselves in a great position for the long term. However, it all starts with the quarterback position.

Lawrence is an incredibly gifted quarterback prospect who has massive upside at the next level. He has ridiculous natural arm talent, showing the ability to hit any throw on the field with ease. Lawrence is also an impressive athlete at the quarterback position who can make plays with his legs and throw on the run extremely well.

While Lawrence shows the ability to fit the ball into tight spaces, he tends to trust his arm a bit too much at times. There are certainly times where he takes unnecessary risks when a simple, easy throw will do. Lawrence does not have many flaws in his game, but his decision-making could certainly use some work.

In the end, this pick is easy. Lawrence is not a perfect quarterback prospect, but he is the best one that we have seen in a while. His ceiling at the next level is absolutely massive and he would give the Jets a legitimate franchise player to build their team around.
