Sam Darnold may still have some upside as an NFL quarterback, but he is unlikely to ever reach his ceiling with the New York Jets. The Darnold era in New York has been a major disappointment and it feels like it is time for the two sides to part ways. Especially if the Jets have an opportunity to land the best quarterback prospect in recent memory.
Trevor Lawrence is an incredibly talented quarterback who is going to be the apple of any quarterback-needy team’s eye this offseason. He is the clear top prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft class and is a safe bet to be the first overall pick next April.
Lawrence has special arm talent and natural arm strength, showing the ability to hit any throw on the field in nearly any situation. He is also an impressive athlete at the quarterback position who feels pressure well in the pocket and has the mobility to escape and create plays with his legs. Lawrence can create yardage on the ground and also does a great job of throwing on the run.
The only real negative in Lawrence’s game is his tendency to play over-aggressive at times. Lawrence has a big arm and he knows it, opting to fit the ball into tight spaces instead of taking the easy play. Lawrence gets away with this most of the time in college, but it could get him in trouble against NFL defenses.
Simply put, he is a special quarterback prospect who would be the perfect player for the New York Jets to rebuild their organization around. If they end up holding the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the decision is simple; trade Darnold to the highest bidder and take Trevor Lawrence.
