New England Patriots: Positions of need for the 2021 NFL Draft
By Ian Higgins
2021 NFL Draft need: Quarterback
2020 Starter: Cam Newton
Many pundits and fans alike saw this coming from the day they signed Newton, but Belichick has finally been given the chance to embrace the modern game. The focus of the offense has been on the running backs so far this season, and Newton has consistently found his chances in the red zone with ten blockers.
This blocker-heavy running game is Belichick’s next wrinkle, trying to get the numbers advantage on every snap he can in the red zone and use his quarterback as the primary ballcarrier to beat defenders to the punch.
Newton will likely follow in the footsteps of many players who have reclaimed their careers in New England and find a new home for 2021 with a healthy contract, meanwhile, Belichick adds another compensatory selection to the pile. Jarrett Stidham was set to have his chance until Newton’s arrival, but with newfound success in this offense system, Belichick could very realistically pursue a mobile quarterback in the 2021 draft instead.
Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields will likely be far out of reach for New England, but a player who could fit their draft-range is Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman. Other names include pocket passer Kyle Trask and North Dakota State standout Trey Lance. Mobility has become a common trait among young quarterbacks though, so Belichick may not place such an emphasis if he thinks he can operate a similar system with a better passer.
