2021 NFL Draft need: Wide Receiver

2020 Starters: Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd

The most obvious need for New England in recent years, it’s no surprise this slide is here. Julian Edelman will be 35 entering the 2021 season and have one year left on his contract owing $2.8 million. Although he has continued to be a productive part of this Patriots receiving corps, Belichick will likely look to move in a new direction even if Edelman doesn’t move on from football.

When addressing the needs of a wide receiver group, there are specific roles that need to be addressed. Currently, N’Keal Harry brings size, Edelman has quickness, and there is no clear presence of burner-speed.

Modern offenses almost always try to find a wideout who can be incorporated into the offense in a matter similar to Tyreek Hill, creating explosive plays downfield as well as behind the line with after the catch ability.

The 2020 NFL Draft was possibly the most impressive wide receiver class in NFL history, but even though New England arrives a year late 2021 holds its own prominent names. Jaylen Waddle is one of the names on the prospect list that could bring the missing spark to this New England offense. A raw playmaker with speed, Waddle could create a menacing tandem with 6-foot-4 N’Keal Harry.
