2021 NFL Draft: Alabama QB Mac Jones needs more attention
The Alabama offense looked good in the 2020 opener, led by 2021 NFL Draft sleeper Mac Jones.
SEC football returned Saturday to the delight of many college football fans, including those who cover the NFL Draft. Plenty of 2021 NFL Draft prospects were on display for the first time, and many stood out, especially on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Dylan Moses made his triumphant return to football after missing the entire 2019 season and grabbed headlines early. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle showcased his big play ability.
But, there’s another player flying under the radar that deserves some attention when it comes to his future at the next level. That player is Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones.
Jones has had big shoes to fill after the injury to Tua Tagovailoa sidelined him for the second half of the 2019 season. He played tough down the stretch against Auburn, and looked better in their bowl game against Michigan.
Last Saturday against Missouri, Jones looked efficient and effective. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-19 victory.
The junior signal-caller may not be at the level of other quarterback prospects, but there are intriguing traits to watch. Jones shows very good poise in the pocket, and looks calm with the chaos in front of him and when there’s pressure in his face. He makes quick reads and is a good distributor of the football. The accuracy has gotten better for Jones as well, and he throws a sweet deep ball. Jones also shows good touch on passes to the second and third level.
Is Jones a good playmaker outside the pocket? Not really, and that will be a big question from the weakness column, especially with the rise of mobile quarterbacks and ones who make plays when things break down.
Lacking playmaking ability only increases the importance of a quick mental and physical trigger as a passer. It’s so far, so good with Jones in that area. A long season ahead in the SEC will be a good measuring stick for Jones as far as the 2021 NFL Draft goes. For now, keep him on your radar.
