Cincinnati Bengals: Round 1, Pick 3

OT. Penei Sewell. 1. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Oregon. 820

Penei Sewell stands out as an elite offensive tackle prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft class and the number one target for the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round. The Bengals go on the clock at number three overall, and with Sewell still on the board, this is an easy choice.

Sewell is a truly rare offensive tackle prospect who shows an incredible combination of athleticism and power up front. He fires off of the ball in an instant and shows quick feet as a run blocker and in pass protection. Sewell also shows impressive natural power at the point of attack and fantastic overall hand usage.

He is an elite-level blindside protector who also easily clears out rushing lanes for his backs. Simply put, Sewell is a dominant offensive lineman who has massive upside at the next level.

The Bengals’ offensive line has major issues and needs some work quickly. However, left tackle Jonah Williams has actually played at an extremely high level. Williams is a very good offensive lineman who is going to be an important part of this team’s future. Because of this, taking a left tackle at No. 3 overall may seem a bit odd, but Sewell is simply too good to ignore here.

Part of the appeal of Williams coming out of the draft was his versatility. He has true five position versatility and will be able to make an impact no matter where the Bengals put him. If Cincinnati finds a way to land Sewell, placing the rookie at left tackle while moving Williams to right tackle would certainly make sense. This way, the Bengals have a high-level offensive tackle duo that would likely do a great job of protecting Burrow going forward.
