2021 NFL Draft: Five teams that are proving they need a quarterback
By Kyle Edmond
Minnesota Vikings
Current QBs: Kirk Cousins, Sean Mannion
The Minnesota Vikings paid up for Kirk Cousins and they might be starting to regret that move. While the Vikings offense as a whole has struggled this year, it has been in large part to Cousins’ early bumps.
Through two games, Cousins has thrown four interceptions and has a QBR of just 31.2, which is 31st of 33 players that qualify with only Carson Wentz and Dwayne Haskins lower. Of the same list, Cousins is also dead last for passer rating at 61.9.
Now, Cousins is going to be paid a lot of money over the next few years, so it doesn’t quite make sense to invest an early draft pick and then place Cousins on the bench. However, the Vikings could be a candidate for a mid-round quarterback selection.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Colts took Jacob Eason in the fourth round as a youthful safety net behind Philip Rivers and the Vikings could do something similar in the 2021 NFL Draft. While Cousins has struggled early, the team knows what he can do in the long-term and might just be looking for another option to create a bit more competition in practices.
Don’t get me wrong, with the money Cousins is getting he will be the starter. The Vikings just might be interested in improving the room as a whole, just in case.
