2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, Pick 9

Scouting Report. WR. Alabama. Pick Analysis. DeVonta Smith. 9. player. 59

*This pick comes to the Miami Dolphins via the Houston Texans

After addressing the defensive side of the ball earlier in this mock draft, the Dolphins would be wise to get franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa some help with this pick. They could look to address the offensive line situation, but wide receiver stands out as a more immediate position of need.

There are plenty of talented receivers in this 2021 NFL Draft class, but DeVonta Smith stands out as a particular fit for this team. Smith is a tremendous natural route runner who always seems to find space in the defense. He is extremely quick and explosive, and is also naturally elusive in the open field. Smith does a great job of using his elusiveness to separate from defensive backs and create after the catch.

Smith is a tremendous deep threat who tracks the ball in the air extremely well, but his ability to create after the catch also stands out. Simply put, Smith can impact the game at all levels of the defense and will undoubtedly be a major pass-catching threat at the next level. The Dolphins need playmakers and Smith certainly fits the bill. Plus, his rapport with Tagovailoa certainly does not hurt.
