Chiefs vs. Texans: Rookie standouts from opening night
By Kyle Edmond
Houston Texans Defensive Back, John Reid
A fourth-round pick out of Penn State, John Reid was quietly added to the Houston Texans’ secondary this season but proved to have a role cut out for him this season.
Despite being a bit buried on the depth chart behind players like Bradley Roby, Lonnie Johnson Jr. and Vernon Hargreaves, Reid was still able to have an impact in the game on Thursday night.
Against a team that features so many targets in the passing game with Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, Edwards-Helaire and more, it was all hands on deck for the Texans, giving ample chances to the rookie Reid.
He was able to utilize those opportunities to tally six tackles over the course of the game, all logged as solo tackles on the box score. That number tied him for fourth on the team in total tackles with Roby. Only Zach Cunningham, Benardrick McKinney and Eric Murray had more. As for solo tackles, he was tied for the team lead with Roby and Cunningham with six.
At Penn State, Reid was more known for his pass defense than his tackling, so this early performance could be a good sign for his development and what could be in store for him in Houston in the future.
