2021 NFL Draft Round 1, Pick 5

Scouting Report. OT. Oregon. 5. Pick Analysis. Penei Sewell. player. 13

I do not have overly high hopes for the Los Angeles Chargers during the upcoming season. There is a lot of talent on their roster, but injuries continue to be a major issue for this team and there are a ton of questions about their current quarterback situation.

If Tyrod Taylor can regain his magic from a few years ago, they have a chance to compete for a postseason spot. However, he is a below-average starting quarterback in the NFL at best, and I expect that the Chargers will eventually turn to rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. I have never been the biggest Herbert fan and think that he could massively struggle behind the Chargers’ shaky offensive line in 2020.

If the Chargers want to get the most out of Herbert for the long-term, they need to significantly invest in their offensive line situation. In this mock draft, the perfect prospect falls directly into their laps, as they snag Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell at No. 5.

Sewell is a tremendous offensive line prospect who has an elite combination of power and athleticism up front. He is a dominant run blocker who secures the first level with ease and moves to the second level at an extremely high level. In pass protection, Sewell is nearly flawless, mirroring opposing edge rushers well and remaining patient throughout the rep. He consistently moves his feet well, has quick and powerful hands, and plays with a mean streak.

Simply put, Sewell is an elite offensive tackle prospect who has massive upside at the next level. At worst, he is going to be a solid starter at left tackle for the next 10 years. Nobody needs offensive line help more than the Chargers and Sewell is the best player at the position in the 2021 NFL Draft. This is an extremely easy and obvious fit.
