Cleveland Browns 2021 NFL Draft Needs: Cornerback

The cornerback position has been a work in progress for the Cleveland Browns for a few seasons now with the additions of Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams through the draft as well as many others in free agency.

The issue with this unit, as it is with most teams, is injuries. Both Ward and Williams have already had their fair share in their career and veterans Terrance Mitchell and Kevin Johnson have also had their troubles. This is where the depth comes in.

Put simply, the Browns just don’t have depth right now in their secondary, especially at the cornerback position. Ward, Williams, Mitchell and Johnson are the only proven players at the position as of now and both Mitchell and Johnson aren’t currently under contract for next season.

Once again, though, this is a position that always has potential in the draft and finding a late-round gem is certainly possible. The Browns would be wise to bring back one, if not both, of Mitchell and Johnson in addition to adding another cornerback through the draft process. The unit is already young, but adding more rookies to the group with upside is always a solid move in the secondary, even for a team as young as the Browns.
