Quarterback

As fun and exciting as Minshew was last season, he was still a sixth-round prospect who was not considered anything close to a franchise quarterback at this time last year. I like that the Jacksonville Jaguars are giving Minshew an opportunity to prove himself this season. You aren’t going to be seriously competitive, might as well give him a chance to establish himself as their long-term option at the position. That being said, it might not last long.

If the Jaguars are as bad as we expect this season, they will likely be picking extremely high in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. If that happens, I have a hard time believing that this team would rather move forward with Minshew than take one of the top-tier quarterbacks in the 2021 NFL Draft class.

Jacksonville is the current favorite to hold the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While it is obviously extremely early, if the Jags do end up picking No. 1, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is going to be the pick. Heck, even if they end up picking at No. 2 or No. 3, Ohio State’s Justin Fields and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance are undoubtedly going to be in the conversation.

Minshew has a chance to play well and lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to more wins than most of us expect in 2020. If he does that, he could easily keep his job and force the Jags to look in another direction early in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, quarterback currently stands out as a massive need for this team and they will likely be looking to address the position next April.
